image by António Martins, 31 October 2010

The flag of the Airforces of the Republic of Lithuania (Lietuvos Respublikos karines oro pajegos): The white cloth charged with the State flag in the upper left quarter and with stylized azure wings and double cross of Jogaila family in lower right quarter. The cross of Jogaila family is white bordered with two black bends. The relationship of the width of the flag to the length is 1:2.

This [reported picture] shows clearly the canton to have 3 equal stripes, as expected, and to take the upper hoist quadrant (1/4th) or the flag area, the emblem on the lower fly quadrant.

Aircraft Marking

From Album 2000 [pay00] - Aircraft Marking - Black fimbriated white two-crossbars cross ("Vytis cross"). The white border all around is not given in [cos98]. The first Lithuanian aricraft marking, that in use in 1919-1920 was more flag related, being a tricolour diamond (as in Brazilian flag) with the Vytis rider in the central red diamond field. In 1920-21 it was found to complicated, and it was replaced by red shield with white Vytis cross, and in 1921 the current design was introduced. Disontinued in 1940, or course. Paramilitary National Guard used tall red shield with Vytis cross in 1936-1940.
Željko Heimer, 15 May 2002

Lithuanian Karo Aviacijos (Lithuanian Military Aviation) was established in 1919 and adopted first marking with national colors in diamond shape, usually on white background and chrges with white Vytis. Those markings can be seen at <www.wiseowlmagazines.com> (upper plane on left photo).
Insignia report that sometimes, the markings are also incomplete due to lack of the the White Vytis, an omission that frequently occurred during 1919.
In 1920 those markings were replaced with two-crossbars cross ("Vytis cross") on red shild as seen at the cover of the megazine in <www.wiseowlmagazines.com> and on the upper part of the lower chart.
In 1921 the red shield was omitted and the markinks were only the Vytis Cross in white and bordered black (sometimes with another white borders). Those are the same markings as used today. See again <www.wiseowlmagazines.com> and also <www.dalnet.se/~surfcity>.
The "new" Lituanian AF (Karines Oro Pajegos/Krasto Apsaugos Savanoriskos Pajegos) re-adopt the same markings in 1992.
[cos98] report two more markings:
- Marking for National Guard 1936-1940 as "shrinked" version of the "cross on shild" marking (see bottom of lower chart at <www.wiseowlmagazines.com>)
- Marking for "Central Lituania" air force (1920-1921): red square with white border on one wing, white square with red wing on another wing and verical white-red stripes as rudder stripes. <www.internetmodeler.com> report: "Another set of marking was used in 'Zeligowski's revolt' in Lithuania in 1920-21 - red square with white outline on left wing and white square with red outline on right."

The Ministry of Defense issued "04-06-2013 LR MOD Order Nr. V-600" that prescribed specifications for the design of the aircraft marking for Lithuania.
